The Importance of SOUND

In this current generation, we are constantly bombarded with sound. Whether it’s through our phone or TV, we have access to non-stop media and music like never before. I’ve known people who hate the silence. They can’t sit with themselves or their thoughts for even five minutes. Sound allows us to drown out what it is that we do not want to accept and hear, or it allows us to tune into that which we want to become.

Whether we’re using music or other sound systems as an escape (such as TV shows playing on in the background non-stop, ASMR, lo-fi, hertz and frequency music), we also use it as a way to CONSUME a SOUND that we eventually become. That’s why it is said that what you behold, you become.

The sound that you listen to over and over again, you consume it and it eventually grows in you.

When I was in the new age, sound was very important to me. I often put on hertz music or certain types of frequencies when I would meditate or create art as a way to focus and connect to a certain spiritual flow and state. Think about sound bowls and why it’s often used during meditation, or even in wellness centers. They want you to connect to a type of state that the sound emanates.

I also used songs from mainstream artists during rituals that I would do. There was one very popular mainstream artist (I won’t name) that I often used their music for worship. I would use their songs and my body as a way to worship a deity that I was connected to. I didn’t know at the time how strong the connection was, but once I got saved by God’s grace all my desires to listen to this artist was broken off.

Most of the time whenever I was listening to a song, be it any artist, I saw it as an opportunity to connect to a type of spiritual state/plane.

That is why I do not believe that you can separate the art from the artist. As a creative myself, what you put out is connected to what you worship. The SOUND you put out (this goes for any type of creative work doesn’t even have to be anything actually audible) is connected to the spirit that you carry.

Think about certain artists. Do they not have a type of SOUND to you? A distinct uniqueness and flavor to them? If you look at their albums and listen to their songs, there is usually a theme. This isn’t a coincidence. They’re often carrying a spirit that allows them to walk in whatever it is they are producing. Lust, perversion, hatred, heartbreak, trauma, pride, love of money, love of self, etc.

I don't want to instill fear and say that all secular music is bad. I still listen to certain secular songs from time to time, but there's also types of songs/artists that I stray away from because it's hard for me to consume and listen to it. This is all by the leading and the conviction of the Holy Spirit and is not a done deal for every single believer.

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, I want to talk about the SOUND that goes on for eternity. The SOUND that emits from heaven.

Let’s go to the very beginning in Genesis.

“Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know; am I my brother's keeper?” And the Lord said, “What have you done? THE VOICE of your brother's blood is CRYING TO ME from the ground.”

Emphasis on the “the voice” and “crying”. Why? God was able to HEAR the SOUND of the blood that was spilled through sin (murder). Think about nations, or just even cities and places with lots of murder and crime. You walk in and, I would argue, it’s not just a “vibe” that you feel. It’s a SOUND that emits from the ground.

Let’s go to Hebrews 12:22-24:

“But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that SPEAKS a better word than the blood of Abel.

Notice the word "speaks."

The blood of Jesus SPEAKS a better word than the blood of Abel - the blood that we read about in Genesis 4:9-10 in which that blood was crying out for justice and redemption. The blood of Jesus cancels that out.

Notice the difference. The blood of the murder recorded was crying, while the blood of Jesus SPEAKS a better word. There is a difference in the SOUND that emits from sin vs. the perfect and pure blood that Jesus spilled for our behalf. The blood of Abel - the sound of murder, jealousy, hatred, anger, sin. The blood of Jesus - the sound of mercy, grace, forgiveness, justice, redemption.

What sound are you listening to? What sound SURROUNDS you?

Let me give you a few verses of the emphasis of sound in the Bible:

“The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.

"Oh sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth! Sing to the Lord, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day. Sing to the Lord, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples!"

"The Lord goes out like a mighty man, like a man of war he stirs up his zeal; he cries out, he shouts aloud, he shows himself mighty against his foes. For a long time I have held my peace; I have kept still and restrained myself; now I will cry out like a woman in labor; I will gasp and pant."

Those are just some examples. I chose random verses, but it doesn’t take long for anyone who reads the Bible to see how often sound is expressed.

Now, I want to focus specifically on two areas in Revelation and tie it back to the SOUND that goes on for eternity.

"And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to say,

“Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!”

And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who is seated on the throne, who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, saying,

“Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”

Notice what the four living creatures say. Then, notice what the elders who cast their crowns before the one who is seated on the throne says. It says that the four living creatures never CEASE saying this, and that whenever the living creatures say this, the twenty four elders go on to say what they say as they cast their crown.

This is a continual cycle, it never CEASES. They worship him who lives forever and forever. THIS is the SOUND that goes on 24/7. It never ends.

No matter what is going on in the nations, no matter what is going on in your life, in your family, in your circumstances; it doesn’t matter how bad of a day you’re having - this SOUND always stays on and continues on into eternity.

This is encouraging for us! Why? In a day of technology, and even as we get closer and closer to the day of Jesus' return, I believe that so many SOUNDS will just ricochet off of one another causing so much disturbance and NOISE. We already see it now with so many things wanting to grab our attention.

But when we tune into heaven, when we tune into the throne room of heaven and hear what is going on - the worship, the SOUND - we remember that we are mere humans, and that God is in full control. That HE has the final say, and the final say was finished when His blood was spilled and that tomb became empty.

Here's the other section of Revelation I want to delve into.

“And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. And they sang a new song, saying,

“Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.”

“And they sang a NEW SONG….” This is the song of the redeemed! This is the song of the martyrs, of the ones who pray for the coming of Jesus’ return, this is the song of the ones who have been RANSOMED by the blood of Jesus, the ones who have been made a royal priesthood unto God. THIS is the song that will be sung at the end of the ages.

I encourage you to delve deeper into Revelations 4 and 5. They are really encouraging chapters whenever you are going through a hard time because it reminds you to gaze upon God, His promises found in Jesus, and it enriches you to endure and keep going in the faith.

I love talking about sound. Every single believer emits a unique sound that only they carry that the Holy Spirit has put in them. No one else carries it. It is BIRTHED (brought forth) by the Holy Spirit, not by the flesh.

When it is working accordingly, the body of Christ comes together in a beautiful harmonized symphony. But what’s even more beautiful is that when the SOUND within us is pure and tuned rightly, and as more and more believers walk in that sound they have that was birthed by the Holy Spirit, the SOUND that we release on earth doesn’t point to the church - it points to JESUS. HE is the only answer, HE is the song that goes on forever and ever, HE is the one in whom the nations cry out for.

What sound are you tuned into?

What sound are you influenced by?

What sound are you SURROUNDED by?

God wants to break off every sound that does not align to Him and to the sound that emits from His kingdom that will reign forever.

Be acquainted with His sound, know it, listen, and be tuned in at all times.
